This year, we’re taking it to a whole new level.

In light of the 2020 global coronavirus pandemic, many workplaces have had to make major alterations to “pandemic-proof” the workplace. While early-response coronavirus workplace safety measures were largely short-term fixes, newly established working patterns are resulting in long-term design changes. 

One major workspace design trend expected to grow in the future – and already being seen among architects, tenants, and developers – is a transition from elevators to interconnecting stairs as the primary mode of vertical transportation in buildings.

Here are just a few of the many driving forces behind the growing stair trend. 

• Building users are looking to be more active at work, with many owners now obtaining Fitwell and Well accreditation for their buildings, and a habit of taking the stairs can have long-term health benefits, among other wellness benefits.

• As technology propels us towards a future in which face-to-face meetings need never take place (a reality we’ve all recently experienced firsthand during the pandemic), new studies demonstrate that “accidental collisions” – the kind that result in creative collaboration – are key to innovation and play a crucial role in workplace satisfaction. And while such collisions may be spontaneous, the setting is not. Companies can intentionally design workspaces that drive collaboration – stairs being a key way to do so.

• Elevators, the only real alternative to stairs, simply do not meet social distancing guidelines.
