Synergi Turns 40: Celebrating Our Past, Building the Future

Forty years is more than a number. To us, forty years is a measure of trust earned, problems solved, and standards upheld over time. It’s a moment to pause and reflect on what has been built, not just in projects, but in relationships, reputation, and craft. Since its beginnings, Synergi has played a quiet but essential role in shaping quality across the built environment. Through decades of evolving design, changing markets, and increasingly complex challenges, the company has remained anchored in craftsmanship, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way. This milestone is an opportunity to look back at where it all started, recognize the people and projects that defined us, and look ahead to what the next generation of work will demand, and what Synergi is ready to deliver.

Where It All Started

In the winter of 1986 in Winnipeg, Canada, our founder recognized an opportunity to provide brass railings to the hospitality industry. At the time, only one local company dominated the market. Seeing room for competition, he launched Accent Brass out of his garage, offering an alternative built on quality craftsmanship and competitive pricing. Rather than waiting for work, the team actively pursued projects, and early success soon followed.

Three years later, a recession slowed the hospitality sector, while commercial construction continued to move forward. In response, the company adapted, shifting its focus to stainless steel and glass railings. Our founder’s welding background and hands-on experience proved invaluable during this transition, helping guide the business through changing market conditions.

As capabilities expanded, Accent Brass evolved into Accent Architectural, reflecting a broader scope of work. Operations moved from Winnipeg to a 25,000-square-foot facility in Montreal, Quebec. In 2015, the company rebranded once again as Synergi, the name of its first pre-engineered railing system and one that truly captured its culture and values. Through partnerships with global design firms and insight into evolving market needs, Synergi sharpened its focus on stairs.

Growth continued across North America. In 2017, Synergi opened a second office in San Francisco, expanding its West Coast presence. Two years later, the company established a new 45,000-square-foot headquarters in Elkridge, Maryland, bringing together offices and its main workshop under one roof. Over the following five years, Synergi further expanded with offices and fabrication capabilities in New York City, Boston, Seattle, Philadelphia, Miami, and London UK, marking its evolution from a small garage operation into a global stair specialist.

Landmark Projects That Defined Us

JBG Smith: AESS level 4 finish

Completed In 2014

Commissioned for a prestigious private equity company headquarters in Bethesda MD, Synergi worked with world-renowned architect Dennis Austin of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners to successfully design, manufacture and install an incredibly eye-catching, yet fully functional, floating modular feature stair to connect three floors of an existing office building.

In addition to the creative design, engineering expertise and specialist manufacturing capability required, a key challenge of this project was the requirement to install the staircase in a fully occupied space. This had to be factored into the whole design process and required minimum disruption to the tenants and, of course, strict adherence to health and safety regulations and the project timeline. The result is well worth it, winning a prestigious WBC STAR Award.

Post Houston: Design Innovation & First TV Appearance

Completed In 2021

Post Houston transformed a 500,000 sqaure foot mail warehouse into a vibrant mixed-use hub and cultural center, connected by three monumental staircases. Synergi’s innovation on the project, specifically on the design of the double-helix ‘O’ stair, was featured on Season 3 of ‘America By Design’, airing on CBS News, Amazon Prime, and other major platforms.

Meta Headquarters: Making Our Mark On Hudson Yards

Completed In 2022

Meta Headquarters was one of Synergi’s first major projects in Hudson Yards. We partnered with Structure Tone, KPF, and KDA Architects to fabricate and install 20 feature stairs with architectural resin guardrails that filter natural light, enhance the workspace, and showcase stunning views across 30 floors.

Google Borregas: Google’s First Mass Timber Campus

Completed In 2023

One of Google’s first forays into mass timber building, 4 custom floating feature stairs connect the Googlers in the team space to each floor and the Café. Synergi’s scope of work included fully factory assembled feature stairs in blackened and ½” thick stained steel guardrails and treads form a stair with no stringers. Through effective engineering and design options, the stair cost was reduced by 25%.

JP Morgan Chase Austin Offices: Building The Future of Financial Workspaces

Completed In 2024

JPMC recently opened their doors to the top three floors of one of downtown Austin’s newest law office towers – 405 Colorado. The 24th and 25th floors feature Synergi’s interconnecting stair with floating wood treads and smoked glass guardrails, emphasizing collaboration and connectivity between employees.

“…the space has exceeded all expectations and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. This is a place people want to be.” – David Brewton, Market Leader Banking in Austin

Walmart Home Office: Reducing 86 Tons of Steel From 36 Stairs

Completed In 2025

Efficient design and smart engineering were at the forefront of Walmart’s new Home Office project, where Synergi delivered 36 prefabricated interconnecting stairs across 12 office buildings. Embracing Walmart’s “more for less” ethos, Synergi optimized the stair design, reducing steel usage by 86 tons and leveraging prefabrication to cut installation time from weeks to days. This innovative approach not only saved 15% in costs but also streamlined construction, helping to meet Walmart’s vision of a highly efficient, interconnected campus.

Voices From Within

Behind every milestone are the people who carried the work forward day after day. Some have been here since the early years. Others joined as the company grew and evolved. The story of Synergi is ultimately a human one, built from long hours, hard lessons, shared wins, and a deep pride in the work. Each person has shaped Synergi through decisions made, problems solved, and standards upheld when no one was watching. Their reflections capture what it has meant to build something lasting together.

“When I started in 2002, the company was still called Accent Architectural. Today it is Synergi, which says a lot about how much has changed over the years. At the time, there were no computers and no cell phones. In fact, I believe I was the first person in the company to have a laptop. Over the years, many faces have changed, which is to be expected after more than two decades, but so many of the names have stayed the same. We have all gotten a little older. One moment that still stands out to me is being asked to track down a camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. I had never heard of one before, but it had been carefully researched because the goal was to capture even the smallest scratch in stainless steel. When I finally saw the photos, I understood why. The zoom was incredible, especially for that time. I am not entirely sure why that memory has stayed with me, but it feels like a reflection of who we have always been as a company. A focus on details, a commitment to quality, and a willingness to do what it takes to get things right.”

“One of the greatest things about being part of this company has been watching the business grow and transform over the years, from its early days into a company with the systems and vision to serve clients across the country and now overseas. Through all that growth, we’ve built an incredible team with unmatched stair expertise while still holding onto the quality and care of a small, family-owned metal shop. It’s been especially meaningful to work alongside and help train employees who have become part of the Synergi family, all moving forward together. And seeing clients we first partnered with more than 20 years ago continue to come back to us time and again speaks to the relationships and trust that have been built along the way.”

“Synergi has always felt like more than a workplace to me—it has felt like a family. From my earliest days, I remember management coming out every morning to greet employees personally, asking how we were and how our families were doing. That culture of genuine care has stayed with me for 23 years. It’s rare, and it’s one of the reasons I’ve built my career here. For me, it’s Synergi’s willingness to embrace change and invest in technology. I’ve seen the company evolve from using fax machines to adopting advanced tools like 3D scanning, and I’ve had the opportunity to grow alongside that evolution through multiple roles. That openness to innovation has kept Synergi relevant, competitive, and forward-looking in a constantly changing industry. What excites me most is the company’s continued growth and global reach. Watching Synergi expand over the past two decades has been incredible, and the recent acquisition in Europe is another major milestone. The next 10 years feel like a new chapter, one where Synergi’s values and expertise will have an even broader impact worldwide.”

“Over the many years I’ve been with Synergi, there have been so many projects that delivered outstanding results.  Projects like DC courts of appeal, the Atrium tree, GW, the World Bank, JHU, T-Mobile SF, Pentagon City Mall, Andrews Air Force Base, Google mass timber, Minecraft WA, to name a few! A moment at Synergi that still stands out to me is doing the Howard Hughes research center in 2005, working on the stair shoe under the strictest safety protocols, with little room to work and high voltage in the area. The expertise we exemplify in delivering an outstanding finish to the client was commendable. I don’t think people outside the company fully see or understand the level of care that goes into delivering exceptional products day in and day out. The craftsmanship, the technology used, and the level to which we’ve set our standards in the stair industry. Many people see a stair as just a stair, not a monumental feature, until it’s delivered. When a stair project is complete, it’s easier to appreciate the quality craftsmanship, precision, engineering, and all that goes into delivering outstanding products. I think Synergi’s greatest accomplishment is how we have made the feature stair industry our own. We have revolutionized the entire industry and have set an unmatched standard.”

“I’ve been at Synergi for over 16 years, and it’s grown about five times in size since I started. We’re taking on far bigger, more complex work now, and we actually have the systems and people in place to support that growth. What hasn’t changed is the way problems get solved. People still roll up their sleeves, take responsibility, and figure things out. There’s always been a strong sense of ownership here, and that’s carried through even as the company’s gotten a lot bigger. The biggest accomplishment that I see is the team and the knowledge we’ve built over time. We’ve developed leadership and technical depth that allows us to confidently take on projects that would have been out of reach years ago. That experience is hard to replicate. It’s not just about growth or technology, it’s about knowing how to handle complexity and deliver when it actually matters. What excites me most is seeing Synergi go global and realizing we’re ready for it. We’re not just getting bigger, we’re getting better. I genuinely see us becoming world leaders in stair innovation. It’s exciting to be part of a company that’s shaping where the industry is going, instead of just reacting to it, and doing it with a team that actually knows what it’s doing.”

“Since I started, Synergi has grown with more employees, more advanced systems, and expanded capabilities, while continuing to support employee growth. What’s stayed the same is the people-first culture and commitment to quality. Collaboration and integrity remain at the core of the company. One moment that stands out is seeing teams come together during challenging projects or tight deadlines. It highlights the teamwork, dedication, and support that define Synergi. What excites me most about the next 10–20 years is Synergi’s potential to grow while staying true to its core values. I’m inspired by its commitment to innovation, developing talent, and embracing change – factors that position it for long-term success. Equally exciting is the opportunity to maintain the culture that makes Synergi such a great place to work.”

Together, these reflections speak to more than individual experiences. They reveal a shared mindset rooted in ownership, craftsmanship, and care for the work. While Synergi’s story has been shaped by decades of dedication and growth, its greatest strength remains the people who carry that legacy forward. With that foundation in place, the company now turns its focus to what comes next.

The Next 40 Years

As Synergi looks ahead, the focus remains clear: deepen expertise, strengthen partnerships, and continue raising the standard for stair design, engineering, fabrication, and installation. With growing in-house engineering capabilities, trusted affiliated partners, and a team of dedicated stair experts, Synergi is positioned to take on even more complex and ambitious projects around the world.

Global expansion brings opportunity, but the company’s priorities stay the same. Engage early. Own the process from concept through installation. Deliver exceptional quality. By continuing to invest in people, technology, and integrated delivery, Synergi is committed to providing turnkey solutions that simplify construction, reduce risk for clients, and elevate the built environment.

The next chapter is not just about scale. It is about impact. Building smarter. Collaborating across continents. Solving harder problems. And remaining a trusted partner to architects, builders, and owners who expect excellence at every step.

THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THIS JOURNEY

Forty years in business is only possible because of the people who show up every day and the partners who place their trust in the work. To our employees, clients, designers, contractors, and collaborators, thank you for being part of this journey.

From a garage in Canada to projects across the United States and the UK, Synergi’s story has been shaped by craftsmanship, resilience, and shared ambition. As we celebrate this milestone, we do so with gratitude for everything that brought us here and excitement for what lies ahead.

Here’s to the next 40 years of building stairs together.
